Pretest, practice, then posttest

Each Part starts with a pretest, then a practice set for each question type, and ends with a posttest. Pretests and posttests are always timed, with no feedback.

Each Part with practice starts with a pretest to measure where you begin, then has a practice set for each question type in that Part, and ends with a posttest. Practice sets open once the pretest is done, and the posttest opens once every practice set in the Part has reached Mastered.

Pretests and posttests are always timed and give no feedback, like the real test. The timer allows 90 seconds per question.

Choose how you practice

Before a practice set there are two settings, Show instant feedback and Show timer. They cannot both be on, so there are three modes.

  • Instant feedback is on by default
  • Your browser remembers your choice
  • Timed modes submit when time runs out

Before you start a practice set there are two settings: Show instant feedback, which is on by default, and Show timer. They cannot both be on, so there are three modes, and your browser remembers your choice for next time. In timed modes, your answers are submitted automatically when time runs out.

Check, then read the explanation

With instant feedback, Check turns on once every question in the package has an answer. Once you press it, your answers lock and the key appears under each question.

  • Explanations on questions that have one
  • Your first wrong answer opens by itself
  • Test mode has no Check, jump anywhere

With instant feedback, the Check button turns on once every question in the package has an answer. After Check, your answers lock, the answer key appears under each question, and your score for the package shows at the bottom of the screen.

Questions that have an explanation show an Explanation panel underneath, and the panel for your first wrong answer opens by itself. If the package has an Overview, a short guide to approaching that set appears too.

Test mode has no Check. You can jump to any package with the question numbers, and if any questions are still blank when you press Finish, Xplodia asks before submitting.

A report when you finish

As soon as a session ends, the report shows Accuracy, Avg Pace and a chart of right and wrong answers. With several question types, Skill Breakdown starts with the weakest.

  • Review reopens each package in turn
  • Retake keeps your earlier result

As soon as a session ends, the Practice complete screen shows your accuracy and average time, with See Detail Report to open the full report. The report shows Accuracy, Avg Pace (your average time per question) and a donut chart of right and wrong answers.

If the session had more than one question type, Skill Breakdown shows your accuracy by question type, weakest first. Below it, the Detailed Questions Review table lists every question with your answer, filtered by All, Correct or Incorrect.

Review reopens the packages one at a time with the key, the explanations and Dio. Retake starts the same practice set again, and your earlier result is kept.

History and unfinished sessions

The History page lists your practice sets and lessons by day, so old reports are easy to find. Only one practice session can be open at a time.

Frequently asked questions

What is practice in Xplodia?

Practice in Xplodia means sets of IELTS Academic Reading questions grouped by question type, written by the Xplodia team in the format of the test. Parts 1 to 5 each have a pretest, a practice set for each question type, and a posttest. You can see right or wrong after each package of questions, or work through it like a test. When you finish, the report shows your accuracy, your average time per question, and the question types that still need work.

Are the questions taken from official IELTS tests?

No. The passages and questions are written by the Xplodia team in the IELTS Academic Reading format. Xplodia is not affiliated with the organizations that run IELTS.

If I retake a practice set, do I get different questions?

Xplodia serves new packages before ones you have already done. Right now each practice set has a single package, so a retake gives you the same questions, and your earlier result is kept.

How are accuracy and Avg Pace calculated?

Accuracy is the number of correct answers divided by the number of graded questions. Avg Pace is your total reading and answering time divided by the number of graded questions, including time spent in other tabs.

Can I try it without an account?

Yes. As a guest you can finish one practice session and see a summary of the result. To keep going, sign up with Google. If that Google account has not been used on Xplodia before, your guest progress comes with you.
